Longtime client Stony Brook Medical Center provided outstanding specialty pediatric care, but consumer awareness of these services was almost nonexistent.

We recommended branding Stony Brook Children’s separately from the adult hospital. We developed the logo and identity system, built an entirely new website and created a campaign to raise awareness of Stony Brook Children’s.

Overview

HighFive Healthcare is the expert at helping partnering endodontists and oral surgeons grow their practices. But when they experienced quick success themselves, they looked to our expertise to help them keep growing exponentially.

Taming the monster in the tooth business.

Much of HighFive’s success is due to their unrivaled culture of family, fun, and personal relationships. Unfortunately, that wasn’t coming across in their marketing. So we revamped every aspect of their brand to reflect who they truly are.

Trade Show

Meeting potential new partners face-to-face at trade shows is a critical component of HighFive’s success. But first, you have to get people’s attention. So we created a campaign built around a giant monster. A monster made up of all the time-consuming business tasks that HighFive takes off doctor’s plates so they can care for their patients and their family.

We wanted attention. We got it. The HighFive booth was a flurry of activity all weekend long, with interested doctors stopping in their tracks to check out our monster and meet our team. With our first trade show a resounding success, our monster is ready to hit the road and travel the trade show circuit across the country.

Successful cancer treatment begins with an accurate diagnosis. The same is true in marketing. At the start of our relationship, research showed the people of Long Island didn't understand what made Stony Brook Medical Center unique. Despite the college setting and medical school, they saw no real difference between an elite academic medical center and their local community hospitals.

One Voice

The first step in educating the public about what makes an academic medical center different was creating a unified brand, one unified mission - "to harness the power of ideas to improve the health of every life we touch." We consolidated the multitude of confusing, public-facing names, logos and looks, and created one brand everyone could rally around, internally and externally. Stony Brook Medicine. The best ideas in medicine.

Leaders

Stony Brook wasn't really competing with community hospitals. As the home of research, teaching, and the latest technology and clinical trials, we positioned Stony Brook as the birthplace of ideas and leaders in the healthcare community. Through key service lines such as cardiology, cancer, and neurology, we highlighted breakthroughs in the most difficult cases to create a "halo effect" raising confidence across all of Stony Brook's capabilities.

From an often overlooked and forgotten system many residents would drive right past in order to get care in New York City, to a prestigious leader in the most advanced medicine on Long Island. Our brand work changed how people saw Stony Brook Medicine, and our patient volume efforts resulted in thousands of prospective patient leads, elevating Stony Brook Medicine to where they should have been all along.

MediGold

When MediGold chose to expand outside of its region, they turned to Lewis for help. MediGold, which is a not-for-profit Medicare Advantage plan, had experienced growth in sales. Yet, they were also experiencing a downward trend in leads. We were tasked with introducing MediGold into a new, already saturated market and reaching new target audiences who were unfamiliar with the brand.

When a target audience tells you what it’s not, affirm it.

Through our audience research, we identified a critical target for this product: the age-ins and their influencers. We learned this audience didn’t see themselves as stereotypical senior citizens. Even more, research showed that they had a resentful sentiment toward aging into the “senior” market.

We understood that these audience preferences created valuable inroads. So we developed messaging to break away from the category’s conventions and litany of sameness. At the same time, we were working with a budget that necessitated a single campaign that must accomplish two goals: maintain interest, retention and new leads in MediGold’s home market, while building awareness, interest and lead generation in the new markets.

Solutions

We developed a campaign designed to tackle common stereotypes that seniors face, and then we showcased this age group in a more youthful light. Each moment was relayed in an energetic style that included three tiers of messaging: awareness, education and lead generation. Through efficient targeting, ads were placed in printed publications, out of home (OOH), on television, radio and online space relevant to our target audience and informed by our audiences’ ages and interests.

We understood that these audience preferences created valuable inroads. So we developed messaging to break away from the category’s conventions and litany of sameness. At the same time, we were working with a budget that necessitated a single campaign that must accomplish two goals: maintain interest, retention and new leads in MediGold’s home market, while building awareness, interest and lead generation in the new markets.

American Cancer Society

One of the most effective ways to fight cancer is to detect it early. But convincing people to get a colonoscopy at the newly recommended age of 45 can be…awkward. So the American Cancer Society asked us to help them shine some light where the sun don’t shine.

Saving lives starts by talking about rear ends.

Since most 45-year-olds aren’t exactly keen on thinking about their colon health, we decided to put power in the hands of their loved ones. We created a website with a series of humourous, online invitations to break down the stigma associated with discussing colon cancer screenings.

Coinciding with Colon Cancer Awareness month, the campaign unfolded across the website, email, and social, following a detailed customer journey that made the process easy to do, share and understand, whether on a 20-inch monitor or a 3-inch phone.

ALS Network

Previously a local chapter of a national ALS organization, ALS Golden West provided care management for families in 22 counties in California plus Hawaii. But their geography-focused name didn’t reflect the outsized role the group also plays in fundraising, research, and advocacy. Changes in the ALS landscape led ALS Golden West to seek a new name and brand identity that better expressed their independence, mission and national leadership.

A new name to trust for families facing ALS.

In discovery interviews with families facing ALS, donors, researchers, care managers, and other key stakeholders, we learned that one aspect that makes Golden West unique is the leadership role they play in all three areas: care management, research, and advocacy. Other ALS organizations tended to be successful at one of those endeavors. We set out to build a brand that unified these three missions.

Strategy

A new brand needed to convey energy, optimism, and compassion. We specifically recommended that any new name should omit the service area, to give them flexibility for future growth. It also needed to sound appealing to audiences both inside and outside the organization. We observed that all three of the organization’s key missions involve connection, and identified that as a common thread we could use to  build a larger brand story.

The ALS Network brand launched in January 2024 at the company’s annual gala to widespread acclaim. Stakeholders agreed the name sounded big, useful, and expressed the idea of connection on every level. The brand identity included a versatile logo with a distinctive mark, representing the three pillars of the organization along with each and every individual that makes up the ALS Network. Plans are underway to further assist the ALS Network with their growth goals.

Wake Forest Baptist Health

We set out to create a cancer campaign that offered more than information—it offered strength and confidence. Centered around the powerful line, "I have cancer. But cancer doesn’t have me," the campaign was designed to give patients a sense of control in the face of a life-altering diagnosis. As home to the only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in western North Carolina, Wake Forest Baptist delivers nationally recognized care with compassion, innovation, and hope. Our campaign highlighted not just advanced treatments and cutting-edge research, but also the human side of healing—from support programs to personalized therapies—reminding patients that they are never alone in their fight.

I have cancer. But cancer doesn’t have me.

The campaign increased awareness of Wake Forest Baptist Health as a leading destination for cancer care, driving more patients to consider it as their first choice. Website traffic saw a measurable boost, and most importantly, cancer-related appointment requests rose by 16% during and after the campaign period.

UVA Health

Facing a rapidly changing healthcare landscape, the University of Virginia Health System decided to expand its service area. Because this involved forming alliances with hospitals that once were competitors, UVA Health needed to raise its overall image to pave the way for this aggressive growth. UVA Health also wanted to communicate the power of the newly expanded system to consumers.

Turning competitors into partners.

UVA Health, through these new alliances, was about to change the conventional thinking about healthcare. Rather than waiting for something to go wrong, UVA Health took proactive role: anticipating their patients’ needs and serving their populations more efficiently than ever before. To establish this new approach to care, we developed the rallying cry “Tomorrow can’t wait.”

Solution

We created an omnichannel campaign using traditional media to run teaser messages paid off by online content. The campaign kicked off internally with a dedicated long-form video as well as environmental graphics.

The results of the campaign have been stunning. UVA Health’s preference as their population’s “hospital provider of choice” garnered double digit increases. At 18 months into the campaign, UVA Health’s preference numbers are the highest they have ever been.

As the only freestanding children’s hospital in the Nashville area, it offers specialized expertise and resources focused entirely on pediatric care — from the most complex conditions to routine needs. Our Everything for Every Child campaign highlighted that singular focus, reinforcing the hospital’s role as the region’s most trusted destination for comprehensive, compassionate care built just for children.

Elevating awareness and deepening trust.

The Everything for Every Child campaign successfully strengthened Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital’s position as the preferred choice for pediatric care in the region. Following the launch, the hospital saw a measurable increase in brand preference among parents and caregivers, along with a significant rise in website traffic as more families sought information and care. The campaign not only elevated awareness but deepened trust in the hospital’s unique commitment to children’s health.

The legacy name was creating redundancies across a growing network of services—but patients and staff already called it simply “AnMed.” We embraced that familiar shorthand and built a revitalized identity around it—one that conveys confidence, clarity, and care. The new tagline, Better Starts Here, speaks to more than clinical outcomes; it empowers every employee to take ownership of what better looks like—for patients, for colleagues, and for the community. From a modern serif wordmark and distinct color palette to a streamlined naming system and thoughtful signage, the new brand was designed to stand out and function seamlessly across every touchpoint. The result is a unified identity that reflects AnMed’s promise: that better truly starts here, with each of us.

The launch sparked excitement among staff, leading to the creation of an internal brand store featuring updated apparel and merchandise—now refreshed annually to meet growing demand. What began as a rebrand has become a rallying point, uniting employees and reinforcing AnMed’s commitment to care. The result is more than a visual update—it’s a shared belief that better truly starts here, with each of us.

USA Health

That’s how many pages the USA Health Website had when the client came to us. Their site had grown unwieldy, with segmented, hard-to-find, and sometimes outdated content. The user experience was wearying, not welcoming, because of its clumsy navigation and inconsistent design.

And the site architecture meant that searching the voluminous number of pages was a frustrating and often fruitless task. The client realized this was no way to present itself to patients who were seeking the expertise of an academic medical center.

A task this herculean was not to be solved overnight. In fact, it took months of disciplined research to inventory the site, audit its capabilities, interview key client personnel as the basis for more compelling content, and develop clear goals.

Ultimately, we agreed that a new site was needed to present a clear positioning statement for the brand, enhance the user experience, and improve site search, physician search, and lead generation, all while creating a solid technical foundation that provided measurable results and a platform for future growth.

A revamped positioning statement now takes center stage on the client’s home page. Navigation is streamlined so that users can find exactly what they want in two to three clicks.

We utilized Swiftype search capabilities in order to provide users with a robust search experience where results are organized more intuitively.

We created a “provider online shopping experience” so that patients are now more readily finding a doctor that suits their needs.

We created user-friendly tools such as “find a clinical trial,” “refer a patient online,” and “request an appointment” as well as other features to increase lead generation.

Of course, all of this would be for naught if we hadn’t built it on an SEO-friendly platform with a HIPAA-compliant database, which we did using Craft as the CMS and NEO as a plug-in that allows administrators to easily add modules to the pages.

This project, nearly two years in the making, was always about results, and the early returns have not disappointed. Within the first month of this nearly 1,400-page site being live, the client saw over 475 appointment requests, 25 patient referrals, a 42% increase in sessions, a 45% increase in new users, a 22% increase in time spent on pages, and a 12% reduction in the bounce rate. In short, the client is feeling better about the site now. A lot better.
